German Stroke Foundation

The German Stroke Foundation is a primary contact point in Germany for issues related to vascular disease and stroke in particular, with a range of services comprising information, education and advisory functions as well as promotion of research and training for health care professionals.

Supports health promotion and the improvement of preventive care, acute care and rehabilitation for stroke patients.

Coordinates activities with regard to the different aspects of stroke on a national and international level. In particular, it links and supports exemplary programmes and promotes appropriate non-profit structures directed at regional and national care.

Supports measures to assure and improve the quality of stroke care by the nation-wide establishment of stroke units and the creation of a seamless care chain. Since 1993 it has established and supported more than 400 self support groups and has built up a voluntary network of 190 regional medical doctors working in stroke units or acute clinics who coordinate activities for the foundation.

Collaborates with:

  • The Competence Network Stroke, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
  • The German Neurological and Stroke Society
  • The Quality Indicator Board of the German Stroke Registers Study Group, being responsible for the Quality indicator information and involvement of patients
